Manage Stress by Having Fun

from: Sandi H.

Stress management is a serious subject because stress can ruin lives.  However, effectively managing stress need not be.  There are ways of having fun while effectively managing stress.  The following are some fun ideas for effective stress management.

Stress balls.  You've seen them.  You probably have one or two on your desk.  I'm talking about that squishy rubber ball you squeeze to relieve stress.  Yes, squeezing that stress ball really can help you manage your stress.  When you squeeze a stress ball, you contract the muscles in your hand and arm.  As you release, your muscles relax, releasing tension and relieving stress.  So go ahead and squeeze that ball for as long as you want to take out your frustration.

Board Games.  We all probably have some in our closets.  Dust off those boxed games you have sitting in your closet and start playing a game of Candyland or Chutes and Ladders.  Although it may sound a bit silly, playing a game can help you relax and manage the stress that gets bottled up inside.  Playing games can remind us of a time when we were carefree and stress was not yet part of our world.

Friends.  We all enjoy connecting with our friends.  Our friends can be an important sounding board during times of stress and help us to calm down.  It is especially important that we feel we can reach out to our friends to help us manage our stress.  Besides, once you've calmed down, you'll be able to gossip about other more enjoyable topics.

Fun Activity.  Plan to set aside time to participate in something you enjoy doing on a regular basis.  Whether it's taking an art class, planning a weekend getaway, or playing a round of golf with friends, becoming involved in an activity you enjoy can help manage stress.  By doing something you enjoy, you can take your mind off things that cause you stress and relax.

Vacation.  Taking a few days off will help you recharge your batteries and relax.  There's a reason employers give vacation time to their employees.  Don't be afraid to use it when you need a mental break from work.  You can't function at optimum level in your job when you feel stressed and burnt out.  A few days vacation will help give you some breathing space and help you wind down.  You can then return refreshed and rejuvenated to your job and work at peak levels again.

Books.  If you can't take a physical vacation, take a mental vacation to relieve stress by reading a book.  A book helps to take you away into another world.  Whether you enjoy mysteries, romance, or sci-fi, you can imagine being a part of the story when reading a book.  This mental escape helps to take our mind off the things that cause us stress in real life as our imagination becomes a part of the story we are reading.

You can have fun while managing your stress.  What you are trying to accomplish is to give your mind and body a break from the everyday things that cause stress in your life.  Try to incorporate some fun into your life and see how much easier life becomes.
